Howard University nets comeback win vs. Sacred Heart

Howard University overcame a halftime deficit to secure a 21-14 comeback win over Sacred Heart at Greene Stadium. The victory gives the Bison a confidence boost heading into HBCU conference play, improving their record to 3-3.

Sacred Heart Takes Early Control

The Pioneers opened the scoring in the second quarter with Xavier Leigh breaking free for a 67-yard touchdown. Howard responded with a steady 68-yard drive, capped by Jarett Hunter’s 3-yard rushing score. However, Sacred Heart regained the lead just before halftime with Jalen Madison punching in a 2-yard touchdown, sending Howard into the break trailing 14-7.

Howard University Flips the Script

Howard came out strong in the third quarter. A blocked punt gave the Bison excellent field position, and Kasey Hawthorne capitalized with a 5-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14-14. Hawthorne also contributed through the air, providing key receptions to keep drives alive.

Meanwhile, Howard’s defense shut down Sacred Heart’s offense in the second half. Safety Kenny Gallop Jr. was a game-changer, recording eight tackles and a sack, while linebacker Ishaun Abdul-Ali added 1.5 tackles for loss. Their pressure kept the Pioneers from generating any rhythm down the stretch.

Scroggins Leads the Charge

With the game tied in the fourth, quarterback Ja’Shawn Scroggins engineered the decisive drive. Scroggins used his legs to finish it off with a 5-yard touchdown run, giving Howard its first lead at 21-14. The Bison defense held firm, forcing a turnover on downs in the closing minutes to secure the win.
