East Orange is the 10th NJ Town Allowing Cannabis Lounges
East Orange is the 10th New Jersey town that passed an ordinance allowing cannabis consumption lounges. However, finding a location will be a problem. The city actually passed its ordinance, which included cannabis consumption lounges last year. However, no organization except Heady NJ is tracking the progress of local cannabis legalization implementation ordinances and publishing the results. East Orange crafted an expansive ordinance that put low fees for license application, with the highest being $3,000 for regular cultivation, manufacturing, and wholesaling licenses, retail being $2,5,000. Cannabis Dispensary License Cap Defeated by Jersey City Council
The Jersey City Council defeated an ordinance to cap adult-use cannabis dispensaries in the city at 55 due to concerns regarding equity and the number. City ordinances are rarely defeated. After a lively debate on Monday, it was on second reading and expected to pass. Homegrow Prisoner Mario Ramos Free of Parole & Applying for Cannabis Dispensary License
Homegrow prisoner and longtime cannabis entrepreneur Mario Ramos is free from the intensive supervision program and seeking an adult-use cannabis dispensary license in Jersey City. As a former High Times employee, the Law considered him a great prize. Ramos was first locked up for 13 months and 18 days. After the referendum and the adult-use cannabis legalization implementation law CREAMMA passed, Ramos had to go back to jail on his homegrow charges. Jersey City Council Discusses Cannabis Dispensary Cap & Equity
The Jersey City Council discussed their proposed 55 adult-use cannabis dispensary license cap and equity issues during their Monday caucus before their Wednesday meeting. Commerce Director Maynard Woodson noted Cream Dispensary is poised to get their resolution to be open at 284 1st St. They were approved by the Jersey City Cannabis Control Board in September. “Have they met with the local neighborhood association? If they’re in Ward E, I’d like to meet them to meet the neighborhood before we give them final approval,” Ward E Councilman James Solomon said. Hoboken Approves Story & JJ Dispensaries Despite Opposition
Hoboken has made progress on the Story Dispensary and JJ Dispensary cannabis applications despite opposition and incompetence in Public Relations. The Hoboken Planning Board unanimously approved (8-0) the controversial Story Dispensary after five meetings that lasted for about 25 hours. The association of the building where the dispensary would be located hired an attorney and has sued separately in court. 51-53 14th Street Condominium Association attorney Martin Calabar took every initiative to cross-examine every one of Story’s experts and even hired their own, who Story’s attorneys cross-examined. Governor Murphy Endorses Anti-Legacy Operators, Anti-Homegrow Rhetoric
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has endorsed an anti-legacy operator campaign and recently repeated common anti-homegrow rhetoric to justify a delay. Cannabis industry leaders launched Buy Legal, a national campaign encouraging adult-use cannabis consumers not to buy cannabis from the legacy market. It’s being organized by the U.S. Cannabis Council (USCC), a trade association dominated by majority White-male-owned cannabis corporations that are Multi-State Operators (MSOs). MSO Sweetspot Opens 29th NJ Medical Cannabis Dispensary in Voorhees
The medical cannabis dispensary Sweetspot opened the 29th New Jersey medical cannabis dispensary in Voorhees in Camden County. They are a Multi-State Operator (MSO) in four states, including New Jersey, with one dispensary in each state. Their other dispensaries are in Maryland, Maine, and Rhode Island. Harmony Dispensary Workers Join UFCW In Prep for Increased Cannabis Sales
The UFCW Local 360 union announced workers at Harmony Dispensary voted to join them as they eye entering the lucrative adult-use cannabis market. Home Grow Advocates Re-New Efforts at NJ State House
Home grow advocates organized their largest effort to lobby legislators in a while at the New Jersey State House last week. Despite New Jersey’s adult-use cannabis legalization and implementation, home grow remains a felony. It was held the same day as the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJCRC) meeting after it was moved from the 20th to the 27th. The New Jersey chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), the Coalition for Medical Marijuana of NJ (CMMNJ), and Sativa Cross organized with the support of the ACLU. NJCRC OKs 297 Conditional Cannabis Licenses, 18 Annuals
The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJCRC) approved more than 300 adult-use cannabis licenses during their first live/hybrid meeting. It was held at the Civil Service Commission building in downtown Trenton. “It’s good to see everyone in person,” NJCRC Chair Diana Houenou said. People were in the audience, hoping to win. Along with locals, there were also minority businesspeople from elsewhere hoping to see their company name on the big screen.
