If you have plans to fly in or out of Ted Stevens Airport in Anchorage on Wednesday, listen up. There are plans to do a full-scale disaster drill at the airport's North Terminal on Wednesday. Because of that, sections of the parking lot there will be blocked off. There will also be an increased presence of emergency vehicles at the airport on Wednesday.

As high water recedes, communities on the coast and along the lower Kuskokwim River are taking stock of flood damage and erosion after two windy storms in quick succession filled rivers and streams and flooded low-lying areas. Some residents reported that the flooding was worse than Typhoon Merbok and rivals this year’s historic breakup floods on the Kuskokwim.

Coast Guard Foundation Activates Emergency Disaster Relief Program
The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to strengthening the Coast Guard community and service by supporting members and families, announced that its emergency disaster relief program is providing vital assistance to Coast Guard members and their families impacted by Hurricanes Beryl, Tropical Storm Debby, and glacial flooding in Juneau, Alaska. The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has already proven to be one of the most challenging in recent memory. Hurricane Beryl, a powerful Category 1 storm, made landfall in Texas, bringing with it catastrophic winds, flooding and widespread destruction. Shortly after, Tropical Storm Debby followed, bringing damaging wind, heavy rains and flooding to multiple states on the East Coast, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Then, just last week, a glacial dam burst releasing floodwaters that damaged more than 100 homes in Alaska.

An icebreaker joins the USCG Alaska fleet
The US Coast Guard has purchased the Aiviq, a commercial icebreaker previously used to support Arctic oil production operations. She’ll become a medium icebreaker for the USCG and will be berthed in Juneau. The Aiviq will be ready for Coast Guard service in about two years.
