Oklahoma City Mayor Preparing For 2028 Olympics Following Return From Paris Games
With the conclusion of the 2024 Olympics Games in Paris, the spotlight is now on Los Angeles, and to a smaller extent Oklahoma City, for the next Summer Games. Although Los Angeles will host much of the 2028 games, the softball and canoe slalom events will be held at Devon Park and Riversport OKC, respectively, in Oklahoma City.

City Hall reportedly issued revocable permits last September for 24 small ce ll wireless facilities, and two of them ha ve been erected in unwanted locations.

Mayor Stan Booker joined two of his challengers, Ron Ballew and Jacobi Crowley, for a mayoral forum Aug. 11 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5263 in Lawton. Candidates Cindy Edgar and Matina Davis-Abney did not attend the event, hosted by the Comanche County Veterans Council.
$40M debt to finance new aquatic center, improve lakes, streets, water/sewer lines
The City Council authorized the Lawton Industrial Development Authority to incur $40 million in debt to finance “all or a portion of the cost” of various capital improvement projects, including construction of the proposed new aquatic center, repaving Lee Boulevard, and infrastructure upgrades at Lakes Lawtonka and Ellsworth.

A new Planned Parenthood clinic opened Monday in southeast Kansas, providing an access point for reproductive care in nearby states with abortion bans, like Oklahoma. Emily Wales, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, said the clinic in Pittsburg, Kansas, was a response to the care needs of states impacted by the fall of Roe v. Wade. She said the nonprofit got to work after an August 2022 vote in Kansas rejecting a proposed constitutional amendment that would have said there is no right to an abortion in that state.
