Actress Storm Reid might be famous, but when that satin bonnet slips off her edges in the middle of the night, she jumps into panic mode like the rest of us.

“As Black girls, we have a sixth sense, like a superpower,” she tells HelloBeautiful . “When my bonnet comes off, I’m able to  recognize and feel that and put it back on ‘cuz you know, you never want your hair to be messed up.”

On nights when the superpower falls short? “I’ll wake up and fix my hair however I need to.”

    Storm Reid the hair chameleon

Black women have a hairstyle for every occasion. We’re ready for anything from romantic pin curls for date night to a beat-the-court-case bobbed wig. Reid is no different. When looking for a taste of power, she turns to the never-failing “bust down middle part.”

“It gives, I’m not doing too much, but you see me,” said Reid. “It makes me feel good. It makes me feel like a boss.”

She loves to experiment with her looks. “My beauty style is ever-changing and ever-evolving, and I have had so much fun trying to find who I am through different beauty styles and trends,” she said. “For my 21st birthday, I dyed my hair like ginger copper, and that’s been really fun and I’ve been a redhead for like a month now, and I can’t really see myself going back anytime soon.”

The balancing act of  on-screen and off-screen glamour

Her character in The Last of Us is too busy trying in the post-pandemic trenches to focus on glowing up, but when she punches out, she relaxes by separating her style from the characters she embodies.

“I do what I need to do on set, and then when I go home, I decompress a little bit, and then I’ll go back into glam mode,” she said.

    Protective Styles is a time-saver

Reid is balancing pursuing an education with her acting career. She relies on protective styles to help her maximize her time. “I usually wear my hair in a protective style,” she said. “Whether that is a sew-in or braids. I always just like to keep things easy and convenient.”

She loves a leave-in moment, but she tries to go easy on the Fahrenheit factor. “I try not to put so much product on it. I try not to touch it with heat, so even though it’s out, I’m trying to protect it as much as possible,” she said.

The Kiss ambassador frequently tucks one of her Kiss Edge Fixer sticks in her bag when she’s rushing out of the door. “I always have to make sure my edges are popping. I feel like your edges are part of your outfit,” she continued. A mess-free vertical product helps her keep things moving with minimal mess. She’s a fan of other products as well. “They have a foaming mousse for braids that smells incredible. I don’t know what they put in there, but it smells really good.”

“That’s so convenient. When you’re running around, you have so many things to do. You can just literally do your edges and walk out the door,” she added.  “When I’m trying to get somewhere quicker, I know that I have a hectic week or a couple of meetings coming up or just when I know that. I’ll be super duper busy. I usually put my hair in braids, and I can just go.”

Storm Reid’s mama influences her makeup routine

That’s not the only thing she has in common with her peers. She turns to baddies of the past generations for beauty inspiration like many of the Gen-Z and gen-alpha girlies.

One of her primary sources for inspo? Her mommy.

“My mom has always done my third 90s lip liner situation, and I always watched her, growing up, line her lips,” she continued. “I wondered what she was doing, and I was like, oh, that looks so pretty.”

She adopted the habit of frequently choosing lip combos to decorate her face card. “Now, usually when I’m going out, I line my lips and put some lip gloss over it because I just think it looks so perfect.”

    Style is personal

Today’s youth have access to everyone’s opinion of them, whether they are famous or not. Reid and her mother started the Bamazing initiative to encourage young people “to nurture their inner light through self-love.”

“It doesn’t matter what other people think you should wear, what other people think your hair should look like, what other people think your makeup should look like,” declared Reid.

“You’re the one who wants to walk around in this style, so as long as you feel comfortable and you feel like you’re taking up space and expressing yourself through your beauty, and that’s all that matters.”
