Red Oak board backs first reading of chronic absenteeism policy
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak school officials are among those adjusting to new laws passed by the Iowa Legislature this year. During its regular meeting Wednesday evening, the Red Oak School Board approved the first reading of updated policies regarding chronic absenteeism and truancy for the school district, after hearing recommendations from the Iowa Association of School Boards. The update comes after the Iowa Legislature passed Senate File 2435, which primarily appropriates funds for the Iowa Department of Education, the Department for the Blind, and the Iowa Board of Regents. However, this year, the bill also established a process for districts dealing with chronic absenteeism and truancy and incorporated the county attorney. Red Oak School Superintendent Ron Lorenz says the law changes what was previously called "student absences-excused" to "chronic absenteeism and truancy."
Wade retires from optometry practice
After nearly two decades serving in the optometry field, Dr. Janet Wade with Portz and Wade Optometry in Red Oak is calling it a career. Portz made the announcement earlier in June. Her last day was June 27. Wade, a Nebraska native, has always served in the medical field, though not always in optometry.
Griswold School Board Approves Board Policies Along with Changes
(Griswold) The Griswold School Board passed the first reading of a series of board policies, including numerous changes. Schools Superintendent Dave Henrichs says one of those changes concerns weapons. He says schools can now allow staff members to carry weapons on district property if they have received the proper training. Family Fun Day at the Cass County Fair to be held on July 27th
(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Cass County Child Abuse Prevention Council is partnering with the Healthy Cass County Coalition and other community organizations to host a Family Fun Day at the Cass County Fair. Next Saturday, July 27th, 2024, from 12- until 4 p.m., there will be activities set up around the fairgrounds for families to find and participate in, including water fights, a duck pond, a garden story walk, hands-on S.T.E.M. activities, a tractor cab simulator, yard games and more!
