Red Oak board backs first reading of chronic absenteeism policy
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak school officials are among those adjusting to new laws passed by the Iowa Legislature this year. The update comes after the Iowa Legislature passed Senate File 2435, which primarily appropriates funds for the Iowa Department of Education, the Department for the Blind, and the Iowa Board of Regents. However, this year, the bill also established a process for districts dealing with chronic absenteeism and truancy and incorporated the county attorney. Red Oak School Superintendent Ron Lorenz says the law changes what was previously called "student absences-excused" to "chronic absenteeism and truancy."
