HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Henderson residents can feel the heat outside and may want to lower the temperature inside.
However, Municipal Power & Light is asking residents to do the opposite, turn the temperature up on one of the hottest days of the year.
The company says the city is in an advisory stage, urging residents to conserve energy where they can.
Brad Bicket is the General Manager at Municipal Power & Light says, “If you’re able you know, raise the thermostat setting a couple of degrees you know close blinds. These are things that are really just being responsible for their usage of energy.”
Temperatures rise during the summer which increases electricity usage, causing peak times during the day.
This can cause indirect consequences, causing everybody to pay more.
Bickett says, “A 5% increase in our consumption of electricity today could result in would result in about 30% increase in our overall cost of power for today so that so the price for power is higher during the peak demand.”
The Municipal Power & Light is trying to change that before prices go up.
The company is encouraging everybody to pay attention to individual usage while the temperatures are above average.
Bickett says, “It saves all of our customers money in the long run and so we encourage people to be mindful of their usage, especially like I said in times whenever there’s a lot of need for air conditioning and other electric appliances.”
The advisory will end tonight, but the company still wants everyone to be mindful while hot temperatures are possible.
