Students at Lafayette Parish public schools won't be able to use their cell phones from the moment they walk through the doors until after the last bell rings. The Lafayette Parish School Board voted during a special meeting Friday on its specific cell phone policy to reflect a new state law that bans phones during the instructional day. Four-Year-Old in Louisiana Dies From Gunshot Wound
Some unfortunate news to report out of Lafayette, Louisiana, a child is dead as a result of a gunshot wound. "On July 18, 2024, at 10:34 AM, the Lafayette Police Department responded to the 100 block of Bryan St about an injured four-year-old child. The child was transported to a local hospital by ambulance where the child was pronounced deceased. LPD investigators were called to the scene and are actively investigating this incident. An update will be disseminated once additional information is obtained."

The November ballot is taking shape after qualifying ended Friday. Races include the U.S. presidential election, Youngsville police chief and state judges. Two positions that were seeking new officials — justice of the peace for Scott and alderman for Duson — were automatically filled when only one candidate qualified. Kelly Clause Sonnier, Independent, will be the justice of the peace for Ward 1 in Scott. Glenn Cormier, Republican, will be the alderman of Duson.
