WeCAN (Western Communities Action Network), is a small but mighty community nonprofit that provides support services to empower and equip individuals and families to reach stability and self-sufficiency. For 35 years, WeCAN has served low-income residents in the 12 cities of far western Hennepin County and acts as a safety net when people are in crisis and have nowhere else to turn.

As the new fiscal year approaches on June 1, WeCAN is looking for candidates who would like to join a group of decision-makers who will influence and shape the future of the organization by joining their board of directors.

WeCAN’s board is comprised of nine members led by an executive team of four strong and dynamic leaders. President Lori Springer is a social worker in the Westonka School District. She is proud to be part of the connection between WeCAN and Westonka Schools, as together they support students and their families in so many ways. Vice President Sherry Valley is a commercial lender for Minnesota Lakes Bank. Her 30-year career in banking has provided the skills and knowledge she puts to use as a member of the board.

Treasurer Stephanie Shea is a small business entrepreneur who started volunteering at WeCAN to connect with the people in her community. That meaningful volunteer experience prompted her to contribute to WeCAN’s positive impact by becoming a member of the board. Secretary Tera White is an occupational therapist for the University of Minnesota. She joined the board after learning how WeCAN’s services have a huge impact on the lives of community members who struggle with financial insecurity.

The organization’s purpose is to address human service needs by delivering emergency service, sharing information, developing cooperative efforts, and making referrals to other agencies as appropriate. WeCAN serves as a resource and catalyst for the provision of human services in the area by identifying unmet human service needs and developing solutions that address those needs, including information and referral services.

Candidates for the Board of Directors should have a passion for WeCAN’s mission and be able to regularly attend board and subcommittee meetings. Initial board terms are three years, but committee positions may be available without a specific term. Board members are expected to take a leadership role in WeCAN projects and serve as ambassadors in WeCAN’s service area.

Put your work experience, board service, volunteer work, special training and skills, professional memberships, community activities, hobbies, or special interests to work as a member of the WeCAN team. You will make a difference!

Interested candidates are invited to contact Lori Springer at wecanpresident@gmail.com. For more information about WeCAN, visit wecanmn.org.
