Registration for the “Great Return of the Atlantic Sturgeon,” a series of outings on a pontoon boat on the James River to view the prehistoric fish as they make their fall spawning migration, is now open. The trips are sponsored by the James River Association and cost $35 per person for people ages 12 and older. (Children younger than 12 are not permitted.)

Trips will depart from Osborne Park and Boat Landing at 10 a.m. and noon on Sept. 14, 15, 21 and 22.

The Atlantic sturgeon is threatened by overfishing, habitat loss, and human-caused threats but a coalition of agencies is working to restore the species through the construction of artificial spawning reefs, which provide critical habitat for the sturgeon.

Anyone under 18 must have a registered guardian participant. All trips are 1.5 hours long, and attendees should arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled trip start time. Snacks or non-alcoholic drinks are permitted in a small bags, but large bags are not permitted.
