Richmond International Airport is investing in upgrades in four areas – cleaner air, energy audits, electric vehicle chargers, and robotics – in an effort to prepare for anticipated passenger traffic growth and as a way to enhance its sustainability efforts.

in its latest 20-year annual forecast, Airports Council International World predicted total passenger traffic worldwide would grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.5%, while strategic advisor firm Oliver Wyman concluded that the global aviation fleet is anticipated to grow by 33% by 2033.

The airport has made GAMS environmental monitoring upgrades at Checkpoints A and B with AtmosAir bi-polar ionization. The air purification system has been shown to reduce human coronavirus 229E, microorganisms, bacteria, and mold by 99%.

In recognition of the significance of energy efficiency, RIC has conducted an energy audit of its operations, which found that its energy use intensity was significantly better than other small hub airports in the United States. Recommendations from the audit by Gresham Smith about possible modifications for future airport uplifts will help provide officials with a roadmap for future plans, they said.

The airport also has invested in two Level 2 electric vehicle chargers by ChargePoint, the largest network of EV charging stations in North America and Europe. The chargers are designed to serve as a convenience to valet customers, charging their vehicles while they are away, and more may be added in the near future.

RIC also is implementing robotic floor scrubber technology, an autonomous system that can cover large floor areas efficiently in less time than traditional methods. The concept also helps reduce labor costs, officials said. The airport has invested in Nil Fisk Liberty SC50’s robotic floor scrubber known as ROSIE, which can route a map to deliver between 98% and 99.5% coverage.
