A 72-year-old man from Hanover County died just after midnight Saturday in a two-vehicle crash on Mechanicsville Turnpike, according to Henrico Police.

The crash occurred at around 12:06 a.m. near Springdale Road. A preliminary investigation indicated that Billy Chestnut was driving a moped that became disabled while it was traveling north on Mechanicsville Turnpike. A sedan, also traveling north, approached the moped from behind and changed lanes in an attempt to avoid another slow-moving vehicle but instead struck the moped and Chestnut, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors related to the crash, according to police. The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Henrico Police Crash Team Investigator L. C. Jones at (804) 501-5000 or submit a tip anonymously to Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or at p3tips.com.

Regardless of if it was influenced by alcohol consumption or not, the driver killed an innocent man. The driver should be held responsible and punished.
