Many older Virginians may be eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits and not realize it, according to officials with the AARP.

SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to those struggling to afford groceries. While the program is often referred to as “food stamps,” it can benefit anyone age 50 and older who has a difficult time affording food.

In Virginia, about 8.7 million households with at least one adult older than age 50 participate in SNAP. However, many others who are eligible for the program don’t realize it, so AARP officials are encouraging those who aren’t sure to call 2-1-1 to learn more or sign up.

Applying for SNAP benefits through this phone number also can guide people to other forms of support that they may be eligible for, such as assistance with housing, transportation, and phone and internet bills.

In some cases, it may be possible to own a home and car and still qualify for SNAP benefits, according to officials. The Elderly Simplified Application Process is available for older adults, making it easier to apply for SNAP benefits. If you are 60 years or older and do not have earned income, you may qualify for a three-year qualification period.
