Henrico Schools to host back-to-school event, Hoop It up tournament Aug. 9
Henrico County Public Schools will host its “Back-to-School Kickoff” Aug. 9 at the Henrico Sports and Events Center. The event will feature a variety of activities for families, including the return of the 3-on-3 Hoop It Up basketball tournament, a pep-rally style celebration, a school and community resource fair, a “Kid Zone” area and an immunization clinic.
Tuckahoe Little League complex project moving forward despite setbacks
Despite numerous setbacks, Henrico’s Tuckahoe Little League complex renovation project is still in the works. After a bond referendum including $16 million for the project was approved by voters in 2016, the county created a plan to improve numerous aspects of the complex, such as revamping fields, creating a new main entrance, building new restrooms and batting cages, and more. The project initially was set to be completed sometime this summer.
Recreational water advisory issued for James River due to sewage release
Effective immediately on Wednesday, July 17, recreational water activities, such as swimming, wading, tubing and whitewater kayaking should be avoided at the James River beginning at the Manchester Bridge in the City of Richmond and ending at Osborne Landing in Henrico County, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

According to James River Watch, testing conducted on Thursday, July 11, showed 817 colony forming units (CFU) per 100 ml of water at West 42nd Street, 1,204 CFU per 100 ml at Belle Isle and 1,987 CFU per 100 ml at Mayo Island.

State health officials are advising residents stay out of lower portions of the James River after they discovered a leak in a sewer pipe. The state health department announced Wednesday afternoon that people should avoid entering the river from the Manchester Bridge at Ninth Street in downtown Richmond to Osborne Landing in Henrico County, a stretch of roughly 12 miles.
