Freshman Emily Karls punched her ticket to the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament after qualifying on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Division 1 Milton Sectional at Milton High School.
Karls (14-5) won the 235 weight bracket, scoring a pinfall (4:43) over Marley Bautista to advance to the championship match. Karls then also won by pinfall (1:18) against Arwen Marse to finish first overall.
Karls, the 13th seed at 235, will face Aliviah Walsh (24-3), the No. 4 seed, in the first round on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
Also competing at sectionals on the girls’ side was freshman Cecilia Mattox. Mattox (10-6) lost an 8-2 decision in her opening contest at 107 against Carissa Choi.
The rest of the MGM boys concluded their seasons at the Division 1 Milton Sectional.
Junior Luke Rux (29-9) won by pinfall (0:50) in his first match at 175. Rux then lost a 7-2 decision to Hayden Chitwood and then lost a 2-1 decision to Niko DeZiel.
Sophomore Nick Gallagher (18-13) won his opening match at 190 by a 5-4 decision over Wyatt Newman. Gallagher then lost a 10-0 major decision to Isaiah Horan and lost by pinfall (1:41) to Carter Wesley.
Sophomore Quran Dunne-Morgan (22-14) won a 12-9 decision against Isaiah Gibbs to open his round at 120.
Dunne-Morgan then lost an 11-8 decision to Dominic McGuire and lost by forfeit to Logan Steffen.
Junior Austin Nickels (19-15) lost an 8-0 decision to Colton Katzfey at 126. Junior Hayden Ballweg (12-18) lost by pinfall (5:27) to Mason Smith at 144.
Sophomore Xavier Denman (22-11) lost a 7-1 decision to Elijah Brummett at 150. Freshman Colton Ballweg (8-16) was defeated by pinfall (2:12) by Austin Schulist at 165.
Freshman Deangelo Clay (23-10) lost an 11-6 decision to Yandel Flores at 215. Junior Brevid Roth (13-13) lost a 6-5 overtime tie-breaker to Dean Harilal at 285.
Team Sectionals
The Monona Grove/McFarland wrestling team had the team portion of their season come to an end in a 53-9 loss to Mukwonago during the Division 1 Team Sectional on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at Mukwonago High School.
For MGM, Deangelo Clay pinned (4:35) Gaige Taugher at 215 and Hayden Ballweg scored a 4-1 decision over Ethan Ahler at 144.
For Mukwonago, Josephine Stachowski won a 7-1 decision against Chaston Dotzauer at 132, Wendell Brausch pinned (5:07) Kaleo Cardoso at 138, Adam Whittier won a 10-1 major decision against Xavier Denman at 150 and Seth Krause won an 11-0 major decision against Dominick Hyatt at 157.
Also for Mukwonago, Austin Schulist pinned (4:24) Colton Ballweg at 165, Hayden Chitwood won a 7-2 decision over Luke Rux at 175, Wyatt Newman won a 1-0 decision against Nick Gallagher at 190 and Grant Stromberg pinned (3:48) Brevid Roth at 285.
Mukwonago also scored forfeits at 106 and 113. Mukwonago qualified for team state after winning 48-27 over Sun Prairie.
