A new bakery, rehab center and transitional housing — plus where to find Spirit Halloween

As kids get ready to head back to school — and families are eating cotton candy at the Manitowoc County Fair — here’s a quick look at business news in the Lakeshore area.

One of my most-read stories, which was a fun one to write, had to do with a new bakery.

Brooke Nebel loved to bake with her mom. Friends and family loved her sourdough bread so much she started selling it through her Brooke’s Bread and Baked Goods Facebook page. Now, she’s got a steady stream of customers and expanded her menu to include muffins and scones.

I also wrote about a new rehabilitation center coming the village of Cleveland. The hospital is expected to create 100 jobs and provide care to 650 patients a year.

The nonprofit group The Neighborhood of Manitowoc, Inc., recently purchased the empty McKinley School building and has plans to convert the building into individual transitional housing apartments. It was a good story to write as a follow-up to the news The Haven men’s homeless shelter is struggling to find housing to move its clients to.

People hoping to buy a costume at Spirit Halloween will have to travel a bit this year. The national popup store isn’t coming back to Manitowoc. Looks like the closest cities to find the popular costume shop will be Milwaukee or Green Bay.

In happier news, we asked folks where they like to go for ice cream. Cedar Crest and its big cow topped the list!

That’s it for this time around! As always, feel free to reach out with business news we might have missed, questions or comments!

    Ciao for now,

    Patti
