James Feil leaving superintendent post with Manitowoc Public School District

MANITOWOC – Aug. 23 will be James Feil ’s last day as superintendent of Manitowoc Public School District .

In a letter to MPSD families Aug. 22, Feil announced the Board of Education had approved a separation agreement Thursday evening.

Feil has served as the district’s superintendent since July 1, 2022, first on an interim basis and then on a permanent basis after the board agreed to offer him the position Nov. 22, 2022. The board voted 6-0 to extend Feil the permanent offer without seeking other candidates or gathering more input from the community, a decision criticized at the time by former board leaders.

Feil originally was hired with a one-year contract after former Superintendent Mark Holzman took a job as Janesville School District superintendent. The Board of Education worked with search firm School Exec Connect and interviewed six candidates in early June 2022 prior to hiring Feil.

Prior to joining the Manitowoc district, Feil served as president of Urban Day School in Milwaukee and as superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools in Traverse City, Michigan.

“While it is hard to say goodbye, the district now has the curricula, personnel, resources and experience to enable it to return to the ranks of a high-achieving school district,” Feil said in his letter to families. “I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together in such a short time.”

No further details were immediately available Thursday evening.
