    MANITOWOC – Get to the library this week for story times, “Spooky String Art” and more.

    Here’s what’s happening at Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St. For more, call 920-686-3000 or go to manitowoclibrary.org .

    Story times for babies, pre-schoolers and big kids.

    Story times this week include:

    • Baby Storytime — 9:30 a.m. Oct. 3, 9 and 10 for ages 0-2 and their siblings.
    • Preschool Storytime — 10:30 a.m. Oct. 3, 9 and 10 for ages 2-5 and their siblings.
    • Big Kid Storytime — 2-2:45 p.m. Oct. 4 for kids in grades kindergarten through fourth grade.
    • Public Safety Storytime — 6:30-7:15 p.m. Oct. 8. Help celebrate Crime Prevention Month by joining for story time with members of the Manitowoc police, fire and sheriff’s departments. Families will also receive a free book as part of the Kiwanis Cops ’n Kids program.

    A Glowforge badging session, a Space to Write and a program on peonies.

    • Glowforge badging session — 5-6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in the Idea Box makerspace. Space is limited and registration is required.
    • Sew a Crazy Creature — 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 3. Use needle and thread to bring a creature to life. Open to ages 8-18.
    • Learn About Libby: The Online Reading App — 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 7. The Libby app gives you access to thousands of free eBooks, audiobooks and magazines that you can read online. Staff will show you how to download Libby, search for titles and borrow books. The class is free for all ages and no registration is required.
    • Space to Write — 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 8. Have a novel or short story you want to write? How about a screenplay or a memoir? Poetry? Graphic novels? Then, you need a “Space to Write.” Every second and fourth Tuesday evening (this month would be Oct. 8 and 22) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the Franklin Street Room will be open to writers of all descriptions, from professional to novice. Find your people in a community of fellow adventurers. Sit in the “Chair of Inspiration.” Take a risk in the “Forest of Dares.” Seek wisdom from occasional wandering speakers and guest presenters.
    • “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Peonies, But Were Afraid to Ask” — 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 9. Jordan Kabat, operations manager of Solaris Farms, will offer a detailed discussion about the ins and outs of peony farming.

    Teen Hang-Out: Spooky String Art is Oct. 10. Register now.

    • Teen Hang-Out: Spooky String Art! — 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 10. Create your own spider web of art with Katie from Glaze and Paint in the Balkansky Community Room. Several designs are available and all supplies will be provided for creators ages 11-18. Registration is required and can be done at www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/spooky-string-art .

    ‘American Farmer’ winds down, employment assistance continues.

    • American Farmer: A Photo-Portrait Exhibition — The exhibit continues through Oct. 20 on the library’s main floor. The traveling exhibition of ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and The National Endowment for the Arts, features 45 full-color and black-and-white portraits and interviews with farmers across the United States by photographer Paul Mobley.
    • DWD employment assistance and career counseling — Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Franklin Street Room. No appointment necessary for drop-in employment assistance but appointments are needed for career counseling and can be made by contacting Ellen Hope at 920-930-6553 or ellen.hope@dwd.wisconsin.gov .
