Sarasota County: All access to Caspersen Beach closed until further notice

VENICE – Sarasota County closed all access to Caspersen Beach Park effective Wednesday because of the significant damage to Harbor Drive South from storm surge from Tropical Storm Debby on Aug 4.

The storm damaged a portion of the road just north of the entrance.

Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, along with Sarasota County officials surveyed the road and beach damage the week of Aug. 12-16.

On Wednesday, Sarasota County closed access to Caspersen Beach from the Venetian Waterway Park Trail, along the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as all amenities within the park.

According to a Sarasota County news release, the park will be closed until further notice and a timeline for road repairs has not been established.

In contrast, Humphris Park at the South Jetty in Venice was reopened Aug. 15, following repairs to the parking lot.

The South Jetty walkway remains closed, while the city of Venice and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers coordinate on a timeline for repairs.

There is no timetable for reopening of the walkway – a popular fishing spot that only reopened for public use after being closed because of damage from Hurricane Idalia
