    Sarasota, Manatee counties under marginal flooding risk following heavy rainfall

    Widespread rainfall in Sarasota and Manatee counties could lead to a marginal risk of flooding on Friday with the ground already so saturated .

    Rainfall totals are forecasted to be 1.5 inches or less on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to develop by early afternoon and continue into the early evening. River Flood Warnings have been put in effect for the Myakka River at Myakka River State Park and the Horse Creek near Arcadia at State Road 72. Manatee River is on a downward trend of flood risk after closing several roads , as water footage continues to decrease.

    Increased moisture and airflow have been pushed into the area by a frontal boundary along the Florida Peninsula, causing showers and thunderstorms from the Gulf of Mexico. The National Weather Service has shared that in addition to the rain received on Wednesday and Thursday, there could be up to 12 inches of rain over the next seven days . National Weather Service forecaster Matt Anderson said that much of that is expected to fall by the end of Friday, as the weather transitions from long, heavy bouts of rain to scattered thunderstorms.

    Residents can pick up a maximum of 10 sandbags at the Sarasota County Fleet Management facility on 4531 Annex Road in Venice, Twin Lakes Park at 6700 Clark Road in Sarasota, and the east lot of Ed Smith Stadium at 2700 12th St. in Sarasota. Pickup will be available until 7 p.m. The city of North Port will open a self-serve sandbag distribution point at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the George Mullen Activity Center at 1602 Kramer Way . Bags and sand will be available while supplies last at the North Port location. Individuals are asked to bring shovels.

    • Saturday : Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. East northeast wind around 10 MPH. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
    • Saturday night : Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 76. East wind 8 to 10 MPH. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
    • Sunday : Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. East wind around 10 MPH. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
    • Sunday night : Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 77. East northeast wind around 9 MPH. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
