Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor, who died in 2011, was a pioneering advocate for the LGBTQ Community long before it became fashionable to do so.

As fate would have it, three of Taylor's dearest friends were closeted gay male Hollywood icons: Montgomery Clift, James Dean, and Rock Hudson. All three men died in tragic ways. Hudson died from AIDS in 1985, while Clift and Dean died in a very eerily similar manner: in car accidents.

    A Closer Look

Elizabeth Taylor starred with Montgomery Clift in the movie, A Place in the Sun, which was released in 1951.

Fifteen years later, Clift died from a heart attack. He was only 45 years old.

Taylor performed with both James Dean and Rock Hudson in the classic feature film, Giant, which was released in 1956.

However, Dean never saw the finished film. One year before Giant made it to the screen, he died in a horrific car accient. He was only 24 years old.

Decades later, Taylor reteamed with Hudson on the big screen in The Mirror Crack'd, which was released in 1980.

In 1985, Hudson succumbed to the ravishes of AIDS. He was only 59 years old.

    In Conclusion

Elizabeth Taylor struggled with many personal and health issues throughout her life and career. However, none of challenges curtailed the Oscar-winning actress from her humanitarian work, or from being and remaining loyal to her friends, in and outside of the entertainment industry.

In once accepting an award from GLAAD, Elizabeth Taylor paid tribute to Montgomery Clift, James Dean, and Rock Hudson.

Monty was in a horrific car accident, but it didn't kill him. He died of complications of his alcoholism.
