James Garner, who died in 2014 at 86, was one of the most beloved actors in the history of Hollywood. He was adored not only by his countless fans around the world but by his Tinseltown colleagues.

That includes actor Gerald McRaney, who is best known for his benchmark television shows, Simon & Simon (CBS, 1981-1989), and Major Dad (CBS, 1989-1993).

Early in his career, McRaney made a guest-star appearance on Garner's second hit series, The Rockford Files (NBC, 1974-1980; his first hit show was Maverick (ABC, 1957-1962). This transpired before McRaney had made a name for himself on Simon & Simon (in which he co-starred with Jameson Parker).

As McRaney once explained, in between filming his episode of Rockford, he visited Garner's trailer to ask a favor. McRaney's parents, who lived in his hometown of Wiggins, Mississippi, were in Los Angeles for a vacation and were big fans of Garner's.

McRaney knocked on Garner's trailer door and asked if the star might find a moment to meet his parents.

Garner was having a meeting with his agent, who was appalled at McRraney's request. Upon observing his agent's behavior, it was Garner who became aghast. Subsequently, the TV legend kicked his agent out of the trailer and invited MacCraney's parents in.

"That's the kind of guy James Garner was," concluded MacCraney.
