Before 'Bewitched,' Liz Montgomery was in 'Twilight Zone' with Future Film Star Charles Bronson

Bewitched star Elizabeth Montgomery made over 200 appearances on television, film, and the stage before, during, and after her small-screen run as twitch-witch Samantha Stephens. Her early pre-Bewitched TV performance on The Twilight Zone in which she co-starred with yet-to-be famous Charles Bronson, is a stand-out.

    A Closer Look

On September 15, 1961, future Bewitched star Elizabeth Montgomery (who died in 1995) appeared in the third-season opening episode of The Twilight Zone, titled, “Two.” Her co-star was future film icon Charles Bronson (who died in 2003).

Directed by Montgomery Pittman (who died in 1962), and written by Zone creator and host Rod Serling (who died in 1975), “Two” is set in a post-apocalyptic world. Montgomery plays a woman, in military uniform, who wanders a desolate world, and meets a man played by Bronson, also in soldier’s garb.

The two characters are on opposing sides, but soon realize they must band together to survive.

“Two” is one of the more notable episodes of The Twilight Zone (of which all episodes are notable), such that there is no dialogue between the man and the woman, who we are to assume will one day begin to re-populate the world as a new “Adam” and “Eve.”

    “Two” Tidbits

Charles Bronson, of Lithuanian descent, played the ‘American,” while Elizabeth Montgomery, of American descent, was the ‘Russian’ soldier.

The only word spoken in the script is uttered by Montgomery’s character who says, “Prekrasny,” which is Russian for “pretty.”

Montgomery v. Montgomery with a Little Sherry on the Side

Director Montgomery Pittman originally envisioned actress Sherry ‘Make Room For Danny’ Jackson (his stepdaughter) as “The Woman,” but network executives vetoed that decision due to her young age (19, at the time). The role eventually went to Elizabeth Montgomery, who was 29.

As an additional note, Liz Montgomery’s hair color was then brunette, similar in tone to Samantha’s look-a-like cousin Serena, who she also played on Bewitched.

    Gig, Kid, and Bronson

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Montgomery and Charles Bronson would kind of later cross paths again due to the 1962 film, Kid Galahad. He starred in the movie with Elvis Presley, as did Gig Young, who was then Montgomery’s second husband.
