Presidential election has political delegates excited in TN, MS

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — We are just weeks away from the Democratic National Convention, which comes on the heels of what many say was a very successful Republican National Convention.

Many delegates in the Mid-South are gearing up for the convention, including on Mississippi delegate anxious to cast her vote.

We met Kelly Jacobs outside the DeSoto County courthouse in Hernando. She’s hard to miss — and not just because of the Kamala Harris dress she is wearing proudly.

“I designed the Kamala Harris fabric, then I purchased this dress online,” she said.

Jacobs is an enthusiastic Democratic Convention delegate from Desoto County. She’s excited to see Kamala Harris move to the top of the ticket.

“I wanted to be a delegate because I know I am the mistress of enthusiasm and I have all these outfits I can wear,” she said.

Since President Biden bowed out of the race and Vice President Harris was hurled in, things changed for Jacobs. She’s been a DNC delegate five times but says this time there is a new energy.

“Now with Kamala at the top of the ticket, massive excitement,” she said.

As the deadline for delegates to cast their ballot started drawing close, Jacobs contacted WREG and invited us to witness history as she cast her ballot for an African American female presidential candidate.

Other delegates know the big role they play.

Former Shelby County Commissioner Terry Roland just returned from the Republican National Convention. He called it a big family reunion.

“Now this time, I am seeing a lot of people that I thought would never vote Republican,” Roland said.

Harris’ campaign announced Friday that the vice president has secured enough delegates’ votes to be the Democratic nominee.
