HERSHEY – Steady rain forced the suspension of the Northeastern-Chambersburg Region 4 Legion baseball game on Monday night.

Though both sides still have a chance in the game and in the tournament overall, when play stopped, Northeastern held all the advantages.

The York County champion led 2-0 with the bases loaded and no out in the bottom of the second when the umpires and tournament officials determined the Hershey Memorial Field mound was too soaked for pitchers to properly plant their feet.

The contest will be resumed at noon Tuesday, with the remaining tournament games to follow.

In the bottom of the second, Owen Wilhide led off with a walk. Conner Rippo singled him to third. Ryan Wilson’s base hit to right field scored Wilhide for the first run, and Rippo scored the second on an errant throw from the outfield.

Garrett Baker and Derek Gross both walked after that, loading the bases. It was then that Chambersburg starter Brody Truett and his coaches requested more work be done on the saturated mound, which led to the decision to suspend play.

Northeastern starter Nathan Moser pitched two innings, retiring all six batters he faced, two by strikeout.

In another game that was delayed by rain but finished before the night’s worst storms, Hummelstown eliminated Paxton 13-3 in five innings.

    Tuesday’s revised schedule

When play resumes on Tuesday, Northeastern will be the only remaining unbeaten team, while Chambersburg and Hummelstown will still be standing as one-loss teams. The matchups and stakes in the later games will depend on how the Northeastern-Chambersburg resumed game ends.

If Northeastern holds on to the victory, Chambersburg will be eliminated. Hummelstown will face Northeastern at 2 p.m. A Northeastern win in that contest would clinch the regional title. A Hummelstown win will force a winner-take all matchup at 4:30 p.m.

On the other hand, if Chambersburg comes back to win the resumed game, Northeastern will get one game off while Hummelstown plays Chambersburg instead at 2 p.m. The winner of that contest will then face Northeastern for the Region 4 championship at 4:30 p.m.
