    Jordan named NC American Legion's EMT of the Year

    Wayne Jordan, a shift supervisor with Perquimans County Emergency Medical Services, was recently named 2023 Emergency Medical Technician of the Year by the American Legion Department of North Carolina.

    Lee Fortier, of American Legion Post 126 in Hertford, presented the award to Jordan during the March 4 Perquimans County Board of Commissioners meeting.

    Each year candidates for the award are chosen from three categories: law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical technician.

    Criteria for selection includes being an active, full-time paid or volunteer member of a city, county or community fire department or emergency medical service agency. Nominees also must be a resident for at least three years of the city or county where the American Legion Post that sponsored them for the award is located.

    As a shift supervisor for Perquimans EMS, Jordan is responsible for ensuring that all ambulances are staffed and that EMS patients are provided appropriate treatment. He also assists on high-priority calls and is responsible for Perquimans EMS' training program, working with new staff.

    Jordan has 25 years of public safety experience. He has obtained his Firefighter I and Firefighter II and Hazmat operations certification. He has also held multiple officer positions as a volunteer firefighter. According to American Legion Post 126 Cmdr. Gary Kollmann, Jordan is a volunteer firefighter with the Hertford Fire Department.

    According to his nomination application, Jordan has played key roles in preserving both life and property through his firefighting and EMS service.
