    Pirate softball reaches 3rd round, baseball teams loses

    Editor’s Note: The No. 7-ranked Perquimans Pirates softball team was scheduled to play the No. 4-ranked Northside-Pinetown Panthers at home Wednesday in the 1A NCHSAA state softball playoffs. The results of that game will appear in next week’s edition.

    In other recent Pirate softball games, the Perquimans defeated the 18th-ranked East Bladen Eagles 8-1 at home Friday, May 9, in the second round of the 1A NCHSAA state softball playoffs.

    E. Gregory and Kayden Hunter struck the biggest blows for the Pirates; both homered in the game. Gregory had two hits, drove in three and scored one. Hunter also scored a run and knocked in a run.

    Morgan Baccus also had a big game, slapping one of the Pirates’ four doubles. She also had a single, knocked in a run and scored three times.

    Lilly Winslow had a double and scored two runs. Indya Long had a double and knocked in a run. Bristyl Riddick also had a double. Heather Smith also had a hit and knocked in a run.

    A. Stallings pitched 3⅓ innings, giving up one hit and striking out three Eagle hitters. M. Stokley pitched 3⅔ innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and one walk. She struck out five Eagle hitters.

    Baseball

    The Perquimans Pirates baseball team, who entered the third round of Monday’s 1A NCHSAA state baseball playoff game ranked No. 3, fell on the road to the East Wake Academy Eagles 8-2.

    In a previous round of the playoffs, the Pirates exploded for seven runs in the top half of the seventh inning and then shut the door on the Rosewood Eagles to win the teams’ second-round 1A NCHSAA baseball state playoff game Friday, May 10, 7-2.

    Rosewood scored two runs in the third and held the Pirates scoreless until the final frame.

    Will Rucker struck the Pirates’ biggest blow in the seventh, driving in two runs with a double. Ben Brown had two hits, driving in a run and scoring a run.

    Jacob Askew, Collin Roberts, Brady Shepherd each had a hit, knocked in a run and scored a run. Evan Conway also had a hit and knocked in a run. Sean Sanders also had a hit while Josh Smith, Cameron Goodrow and Maddux Thach all scored a run in the Pirates’ seventh inning.

    Thach went the distance to pick up the win. He gave up two runs, both earned, on five hits and three walks in seven innings of work. He also struck out seven Eagle hitters.

    Perquimans 14, North Duplin 1The Perquimans County Pirates defeated the North Duplin Rebels 14-1 Tuesday, May 7, in the 1A NCHSSA Baseball State Championship playoffs.

    The Pirates jumped on the Rebels in the first three innings, scoring three, four and seven runs in successive frames. North Duplin managed only one run and the game was run-ruled after five innings.

    Cameron Goodrow and Maddux Thach led the Pirates’ 11-hit attack, as each collected three hits. Goodrow also scored two runs and knocked in a run. Thach scored three runs.

    Brady Shepherd and Sean Saunders each had two hits. Shepherd, who doubled, also drove in two and scored a run. Saunders scored two runs.

    Colin Roberts knocked in three runs and scored one. Jacob Askew had a hit, knocked in two runs, and scored three times.

    Evan Conway and Ben Brown also each had a run batted in.

    Thach pitched three innings to record the win. He gave up one unearned run on one hit. He walked one and struck out four Rebel hitters. Conner Futrell pitched two innings. He gave up no runs or hits, walked three and struck out one hitter.
