HERTFORD — Perquimans voters who choose to vote early will have a new site where they can cast their ballot for the fall election.

The Perquimans County Board of Elections held a ribbon cutting Wednesday to celebrate its new location at 333 Winfall Blvd., Hertford. Approximately 60 people gathered for the event.

The new site features 2,200 square feet and is the former location of Dr. Neil Denunzio’s Perquimans Medical Center. A new sign indicates the election board’s location.

According to Jackie Greene, Perquimans Board of Elections director, the new county-owned site has several advantages over the elections board’s former site at 601A S. Edenton Road Street, including more space to hold training sessions for poll workers and meetings for elections board members.

“We moved here in January after being located over on South Edenton Road Street at least 35 years,” Greene said. “This site is more visible, more centrally located.”

According to Greene, the building underwent renovations to accommodate the elections office.

“Safety security has been updated, and we partner with law enforcement and (emergency management) to train and discuss cyber and physical safety plans,” she said.

Kathy Treiber, a former Board of Elections director who is running unopposed for an open seat on the Perquimans Board of Commissioners in November, also attended Wednesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony.

“I am thrilled to see the new location, to see we are taking our voting privileges seriously by providing a private and secure location,” she said. “They have a dedicated parking lot for poll workers and a small grassy area outside if needed.”

Vera Murrill, a Board of Elections member, agreed the new site is better both for elections staff and voters. Preparation for the 2024 general election on Nov. 5 is already underway.

According to its website, the Perquimans Board of Elections will begin mailing absentee ballots to eligible voters who request one on Sept. 6. The deadline for requesting an absentee ballot is Oct. 29, and completed ballots have to be returned to the elections office by the time election-day polls close at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 5.

The deadline to register to vote or change parties is 5 p.m. on Oct. 11, although same-day registration will be available during the in-person early voting period which starts at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 and ends at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Perquimans voters who need to make a voter photo ID card are encouraged to come into the office now before the start of early voting. The elections office will issue voter ID cards during regular business hours, except for the period between the end of early voting and the end of election day.

The Perquimans Board of Elections will hold its next meeting at its new offices on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m.
