Discovery flights offered at Range Regional Airport

HIBBING—A new opportunity for those considering a career in aviation is coming to Range Regional Airport in Hibbing.

A Discovery Flight event for ages 12 and up is being offered Saturday, Aug. 10, in the General Aviation Building at the airport.

The Duluth-based Lake Superior Helicopters has offered Discovery Flights since 2019, according to a marketing intern for the company.

“Take the joysticks in your own hands for a hands-on experience where experts put you in the pilot’s seat,” reads a promotional poster for the event.

The schedule for a Discovery Flight typically starts with a student coordinator, introducing the pilot, conducting a safety briefing before the flight, and inquiring what students find interesting about the aircraft, seeing what past experience they might have, and going over the controls in the aircraft before taking off.

Range Regional Airport Executive Director Barrett Ziemer said the airport is very excited about hosting its first Discovery Flight event.

“This event will provide aviation enthusiasts with a way to learn about aviation careers as well as local opportunities to receive flight instruction,” Ziemer said.

Following the flight there is a question and answer session to gauge interest in continuing with a flight training program such as the one offered at Lake Superior College in Duluth.

Helicopter Discovery Flights are 30 minutes in duration and airplane Discovery Flights have a 60 minute duration, according to a flyer. Spots are limited so advance reservations are requested. Cost is $295 per flight.
