Severson works to address clients' individual needs

HIBBING—At 21 years old and fresh out of college, Michelle Severson began a journey that led to the career she is still enjoying 35 years later.

“I get up every day and feel blessed to help people with the problems they are facing with insurance and investments and am happy to be able to help them,” Severson said in a recent phone interview. “I love what I do and it’s not ‘a job.’

Severson is the owner of Severson Financial Strategies & Investments LLC, located at 522 East Howard Street, Suite 100 in the Hibbing Business Center in Hibbing.

A Hibbing native, Severson said after high school she attended the University of Wisconsin, Superior and upon graduating with a major in business administration and a minor in finance, moved to her hometown where she started her own business.

“I chose this field because I like helping people and it gave me an opportunity to help people with their insurance and investments,” Severson said.

“My mission is to get to know and understand your needs, wants, and long-term goals,” reads a mission statement found on Severson Financial Strategies & Investments website. “I want to help you develop, implement, and monitor a strategy that’s designed to address your individual situation.”

Throughout her career Severson said she’s developed so many relationships with the people she’s met.

“I don’t call them clients, I call them friends,” she said.

Now days a majority of her work involves investments and retirement planning, along with insurance, particularly healthcare, Severson noted.

“I do a lot with Medicare supplements now, and have become a specialist so-to-say in senior benefits with retiring planning, Medicare supplements and applying for Social Security.

Severson said she works with health insurance, including group health insurance and employee volunteer benefits, and represents MnSure and enrolls people on the State of Minnesota portal for insurance.

When she was just starting out, Severson recalled she began selling group health insurance.

As a part of the business community, Severson served as director for the Hibbing Winter Frolic, a community winter festival for 20 years.

In her spare time Severson enjoys boating, biking and spending time with her two dogs at her home on Island Lake.

Severson credits her significant other, Neil of 25 years, and her “two wonderful parents,” Bill and Sandi Buchwitz for their support.

“They all have supported me, my business and what I do,” she said.

A proud mom, Severson said her daughter, Emily has followed in her footsteps and is working with Allianz Financial in Texas.
