Workers plugging old, methane-leaking orphan oil and gas wells across Michigan
BOYNE FALLS, MI – The pungent odor of brine wafted across an old well site in eastern Charlevoix County as workers pumped hundreds of gallons of concrete deep underground. An oil field crew used heavy machinery to slide a metal plug 1,250 feet below ground and seal off an old brine disposal well. As they backfilled the hole with concrete, the freshly mixed material displaced the saltwater that rose to the surface.

Kalamazoo breakfast spot to close downtown location 1 year after opening
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Staff at Berries Famous Pancake House in downtown Kalamazoo say they were given four days notice that their restaurant was closing down. The Berries location at 234 W. Michigan Ave. opened in June 2023, and its last day will be Sunday, July 28. Berries’ original location at 4311 S Westnedge Ave. will remain open, Manager Danielle Miller said.
