Cameron man sentenced for robbery; endangering lives of two women
Jul. 23—Cameron resident Barry Maurice Thompson, 59, was sentenced to between 110 and 144 months in the North Carolina Department of Corrections on July 15 for common law robbery. City Council honors Wood, Mitchell
ASHEBORO — Elizabeth Mitchell and Brian Wood were honored by the Asheboro City Council on July 11. Mitchell recently retired as executive director of the United Way of Randolph County after 21 years. The native of Scotland had been with United Way of the Triangle when the position in Asheboro came open. She agreed to take over temporarily and stayed 21 years.

Nancy Stewart Wynn, 68, of Southern Pines, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2024, at her home. She was born Jan. 31, 1956, in Richmond County, daughter of Elizabeth Cribbs Stewart and the late Kenneth Bert Stewart. Nancy was an affectionate, dedicated and kind individual who always put the needs of others ahead of her own.

Edwin Howell Matthewson
Edwin Howell Matthewson died of old age at his home near Pinehurst, North Carolina on July 20, 2024. He was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on August 14, 1926. His parents Edwin and Frances Matthewson owned a floral business with a large greenhouse and downtown retail store. When the Great Depression caused the loss of their business and home, Frances moved daughter Jane and son Edwin to the home of her parents, Charles and Hatta Howell, who lived on a farm near Coopersville, Michigan.

Historical Association Dedicates the Kenneth Black Cemetery
The Moore County Historical Association hosted a dedication of the Kenneth Black Cemetery, in Southern Pines, on Saturday, July 20, at 10 a.m. The date coincided with the 243rd anniversary of the Loyalist’s death during the American Revolutionary War. Members of the Black family, and local officials, including former Mayor Carol Haney and Southern Pines Mayor Taylor Clement, attended. Historian Andrew Diemer presented a short lecture on the Tory War of 1781, and descendant children of Kenneth Black laid a wreath at his grave, pictured below. A bagpiper performed at the ceremony, in addition to the firing of a traditional musket.
