Ethel “Sue” Coore Simpson, age 87, of Vass, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill surrounded by her family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 4:00PM at Mt. Pleasant Church with Rev. Dr. Greg Poplin and Pastor Chandler Wilkes officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 3:00-4:00PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Carthage man arrested for felony sexual exploitation of minor
Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields announced an arrest on Thursday following an investigation in the Carthage area. On May 4, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office initiated an undercover investigation after receiving information regarding an individual allegedly in possession of child sexual abuse material. This investigation has culminated in the arrest of Robert Thomas, age 45, of Heritage Farm Road, Carthage.
Athlete of the week: Jonah Ridgill
Former Chatham Charter basketball standout Jonah Ridgill earns athlete of the week honors for the week of July 15. Ridgill played in the East-West All-Star Basketball Game last week, pouring in 14 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes for the West All-Stars. In a 108-92 winning effort over the East, Ridgill made his impact mostly in transition as he ran the floor for open layups throughout the game.

Radie Catherine McCraney Deese, age 93, of Lakeview passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Dahlia Gardens Center and Rehab in Aberdeen, surrounded by her family. Radie was born on October 4, 1930 to the late Ralph and Cornelia Priest McCraney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Grier Deese; daughter, Donna L. A North Carolina high school teacher was arrested Wednesday for allegedly sexually abusing a student, police said. Britney Marie Vernon, 39, was hit with three counts of felony indecent liberties with a student and three counts of felony sex acts with a student, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.

Southwestern Randolph’s Popp cherishes tennis success, NCHSAA award
ASHEBORO – Allie Popp’s senior year at Southwestern Randolph was her best on the tennis courts and beyond. Even with her playing days done, she was reaping awards. Popp was presented with the Pat Gainey Award, which is a student scholarship in memory of Pat Gainey of Dunn. The criteria includes at least a cumulative GPA of 3.2, possess a strong work ethic, demonstrate athletic success during the high school career and demonstrate respect for coaches and teammates.
First Bancorp shares rise on earnings report
Shares of Southern Pines-based First Bancorp gained more than 13% early Thursday after the parent of First Bank reported strong earnings. The company had a second-quarter profit of $28.7 million, or 70 cents per share, versus $29.4 million a year earlier. For the first half of the year, First Bancorp earned $54 million, versus $44.6 million, in the same period last year.
New SCC Scholarship Honors Buddy Spong
The Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club is raising funds for a new scholarship named in honor of Buddy Spong that will assist Sandhills Community College students. The legacy scholarship was announced during a celebration of life for Spong at BPAC’s Owens Auditorium, on Sunday, July 21 on the SCC campus. A retired educator and active community volunteer, Spong died on March 15, five months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Jeffrey Scott Ellis, 54, of Pinehurst, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at FirstHealth Hospice House, in Pinehurst. Jeff battled a long illness but was blessed to pass surrounded by all his family. Jeff was born in Medina, Ohio, on March 4, 1970, to the late William Perry Freeman Ellis and Dian Barber Ellis.
