Improved loan portfolio lifts First Bancorp's second-quarter profit
A significant lowering in First Bancorp’s loan-loss provision during the second quarter was the primary factor in the bank’s 2.3% jump in net income to $28.7 million. The Southern Pines-based bank reported Wednesday diluted earnings were 70 cents, down 1 cent from year ago. The average earnings forecast was 66 cents by two analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research.
Siler City cocaine bust leads to arrest
SILER CITY — A Staley man is facing several charges for allegedly distributing cocaine in the Siler City area. On July 19, following an extensive investigation, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office arrested Anthony Devon Cunningham, 34, of the 690 block of Cooper Road in Staley on drug charges.

One of the region's largest employers to layoff hundreds
Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) has informed North Carolina officials that it plans to close select manufacturing operations at its massive facilities in Rocky Mount and Sanford, resulting in hundreds of layoffs. <\p> The closures will result in the global pharmaceutical company terminating about 210 employees from the two facilities, including 60 workers in Rocky Mount and 150 in Sanford. <\p>
