Obituary for Ethel “Sue” Coore Simpson
Ethel “Sue” Coore Simpson, age 87, of Vass, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill surrounded by her family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 4:00PM at Mt. Pleasant Church with Rev. Dr. Greg Poplin and Pastor Chandler Wilkes officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 3:00-4:00PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Radie Catherine McCraney Deese, age 93, of Lakeview passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Dahlia Gardens Center and Rehab in Aberdeen, surrounded by her family. Radie was born on October 4, 1930 to the late Ralph and Cornelia Priest McCraney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Grier Deese; daughter, Donna L. Deese; brother, Ralph Calvin McCraney and sister, Ruby C. Moody.
Carthage man arrested for felony sexual exploitation of minor
Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields announced an arrest on Thursday following an investigation in the Carthage area. On May 4, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office initiated an undercover investigation after receiving information regarding an individual allegedly in possession of child sexual abuse material. This investigation has culminated in the arrest of Robert Thomas, age 45, of Heritage Farm Road, Carthage.

A North Carolina high school teacher was arrested Wednesday for allegedly sexually abusing a student, police said. Britney Marie Vernon, 39, was hit with three counts of felony indecent liberties with a student and three counts of felony sex acts with a student, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.

PINEHURST — FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, including its Hoke and Richmond campuses, has earned recognition as one of the Best Hospitals in America by Money. First Bancorp shares rise on earnings report
Shares of Southern Pines-based First Bancorp gained more than 13% early Thursday after the parent of First Bank reported strong earnings. The company had a second-quarter profit of $28.7 million, or 70 cents per share, versus $29.4 million a year earlier. For the first half of the year, First Bancorp earned $54 million, versus $44.6 million, in the same period last year.

New SCC Scholarship Honors Buddy Spong
The Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club is raising funds for a new scholarship named in honor of Buddy Spong that will assist Sandhills Community College students. The legacy scholarship was announced during a celebration of life for Spong at BPAC’s Owens Auditorium, on Sunday, July 21 on the SCC campus. A retired educator and active community volunteer, Spong died on March 15, five months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
