(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly two years after witnessing the parade shooting, a Highland Park resident reflects on recent successes and challenges in the efforts to reduce gun violence.

Scott Tinkoff joined the group OneAim Illinois after going to the parade with his family. The family was one of many that ran to seek shelter during the parade shooting.

None of them was injured, but his now almost 8-year-old was diagnosed with anxiety.

Tinkoff says the disappointment after the shooting suspect rejected a plea deal in court last week was similar to how he felt after going to Congress days after the parade.

“You go with an expectation, you're very passionate about something, and it may not go your way. And you see that, look, there's going to be obstacles.

He calls it a great step forward that the Supreme Court decided this week not to hear a challenge to the state’s ban on semi-automatic weapons.

“The assault weapons ban, the ghost guns ban, have held up in the state. They continue to come under fire but they're holding up. Gives me a lot of hope.”
