The first African-American female keynote speaker was introduced by the first woman as President of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, in a naturalization court session presided over partially by the first female presiding judge of the U.S. District Court of Western Virginia with 74 immigrants spending their first day as U.S. citizens. July 4, 2024 is Elizabeth K. Dillon’s first day as the Charlottesville federal court’s presiding judge, and this naturalization ceremony was her first official act in that role. She presided along with Judge Albert Diaz, who in July 2023 became the first Hispanic jurist to become presiding judge of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond.

Virginia Zoo brings back Adult Night with drinks, a DJ, and food trucks
NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Zoo is once again allowing grown-ups who want to unleash their inner wild child can do so with its latest Adult Night on Saturday, July 13. The 21 and up event features free activities like bounce houses, lawn games, and a DJ dance party. Virginia high school faces recruiting questions after 30 football players transferred this spring
A Virginia high school raised eyebrows internally when 30 new students transferred to the school this spring with the intention of playing on the football team. Hayfield Secondary School (Alexandria, Va.) is now under investigation by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for the net gain of 23 new students at a time when enrollment was dropping countywide, according to the Fairfax County Times. The association does not allow transfer or enrollment of school “made because of athletic ability,” according to its handbook.
