October 19, 1923 – July 4, 2024 - Edith Laverna (Sahnow) Jarrell, 100, passed away in the early morning of July 4, 2024. Edith was the daughter of Ben and Theresa (Zetzman) Sahnow of Hillsboro. She was born on a dairy farm and creamery in Mountaindale,Oregon on October 19, 1923.

Edith attended David Hill and Peter Boscow schools in Hillsboro and graduated from Hilhi in 1941. As a young woman, Edith enjoyed roller skating at Shute Park with her girlfriends, including her "friend for life," Esther (Sturm) Wolfe.

During the WW II years, Edith worked at Bird's Eye and Piggly Wiggly in Hillsboro, and rode the bus in Portland to work at Dunn and Bradstreet and Olds and Kings in credit. Later in life she was employed by the Newstimes/Times LItho Print for nearly 20 years. Wherever she worked she formed and enjoyed precious friendships.

Edith married a returning GI, Burl Jarrell, of Forest Grove in 1947. They celebrated 77 years of marriage this past February. She was a denoted wife, mother, and homemaker, excelling with her garden and preserving scores of quarts of pears, peaches, prunes, applesauce, juice, jams and jellies yearly. Edith enjoyed many kinds of music and got pleasure from playing the piano and accordion, making sure that music was part of the family life. Summertime was water skiing time with friends and family. In retirement, Burl and Edith took many springtime camping trips to Death Valley to refresh from the Oregon winter where she hiked about with children and grandchildren.

Edith's Christian faith was an important part of her life. She and Burl attended Mount Olive Lutheran Church for many years. When younger she was active in Sunday School teaching and women's ministries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Vern Sahnow and Joyce Cady, and son-in-law Doug Overholser. She is survived by her husband, Burl, of Forest Grove; son Wes and his wife, Leslie Cooperband of Champaign, Illinois; Marilyn Jarrell and friend, Tim Johnson of Seattle; and Joan Overholser of Forest Grove. Five grandchildren and their spouses survive Edith; Ben and Lauren, Emily, Annie and David, Peter and Rosanna, Liza and Curtis. Edith and Burl are blessed with eight great grandchildren: Margot, Camille, Ingrid, Elliot, Irene, Noelle, Joshua and Henry. Edith is also survived by a host of beloved extended family. In later life she was especially blessed by the loving attention of some local nieces and nephews; Gayla, Rob, Val, Donna, Nan, Bev, Joe and Marcia.

The family suggests that memorial gifts in Edith's memory be directed to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove or Forest Hills Lutheran Christian School in Cornelius, Oregon.
