    Hillsboro's Pix in the Park movie nights begin early next month

    With almost 3,000 votes cast for the community’s favorite movies for the summer, Hillsboro’s annual Pix in the Park kicks off on Friday, Aug. 2, with a showing of Disney’s “Hercules.”

    Five movies made the list of top movies via the Engage Hillsboro survey in February and March. Each is scheduled to run in a different park each Friday through the month of August. Those attending can bring blankets and low-back chairs for comfort during the event.

    Movie-goers can bring their own food or snack vendors will be on hand. Shows are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

    And the winners are:

    Aug. 2: Disney’s “Hercules,” at Griffin Oaks Park, 18990 N.E. Griffin Oaks. St. Hercules, a son of gods, was snatched as a baby by Hades and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god. Now a teenager, Hercules needs to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus.Aug. 9: “Wish” (with a soundtrack entirely in Spanish with Spanish subtitles) at Walnut Street Park, 1717 S.E Walnut St. A young woman named Asha possesses wild wishes for happiness. After making a wish on a starry night, Asha is surprised when Star, a ball of cosmic energy, comes down to accompany her. Asha and Star must work together to defeat the ruthless ruler, King Magnifico, who threatens the safety of her local community.Aug. 16: “Jurassic Park” (Rated PG) at Orenco Woods Nature Park, 7100 N.E. Birch St. A pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.Aug. 23: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” at Shadywood Park, 535 N.E. 24th Ave. A plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother Luigi, trying to save a captured princess.Aug. 30: “Barbie” (Rated PG) at Shute Park, 750 S.E. Eighth Ave. Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.

    Don’t forget too that a final Pix in the Park movie is planned indoors, but not until Oct. 25. That’s when a Creature Double Feature is set for the Hillsboro Futsal and Soccer Academy, 330 S.W. Walnut St. The movies are “Dracula” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon.”
