HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - Township Police will host a two-hour celebratory observance of National Night Out at Mountain View Park Aug. 6 beginning at 6 p.m.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

The first Night Out event was held in western Pennsylvania in 1980 and has since grown to thousands of locations in the US and communities around the world.

Police will mingle and interact with families and participate in games; a helicopter will fly in and land for hands-on tours of the aircraft; police and elected officials will take turns in a dunk tank and there will be a K9 demonstration, face painting and more.

Civic groups and local businesses will be on hand with displays.

    From the NNO website:

"National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

"Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas and select areas celebrate on the first Tuesday in October). Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more."
