In addition to commercial advertising, the digital screens will display authorized information from Hillsborough Township, including traffic updates, emergency messaging and other notifications, according to Mayor Robert Britting.

The single monopole structure is set back on a slight rise alongside the state highway on property owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad across the highway from the Midpoint Logistics Center industrial and warehousing complex.

The structure is 29.5 feet in height, almost as tall as a three-story building. It is owned and will be operated by Outfront Media of Fairfield; the company is leasing the property from the railroad company. A work crew from the company was on-site Thursday.

The new billboard replaces five other static billboards in the immediate area on both sides of the trestle.

The structure will generate tax revenue for the township, Britting said.

The digital billboard will have a display screen measuring 378 square-foot on each side, and will be viewed by motorists driving north and south on Route 206.

The base of the monopole will be landscaped, according to Britting,

The Township Committee approved installation of the sign Jan. 8, 2024. according to the ordinance:

"The billboard operator shall agree to make the digital billboard available to: a) local emergency services, including the Township's police, fire, rescue and emergency management, for use during emergency situations; and b) to the Township for non-emergency municipal use of 12.5% of total daily advertising time on days when the digital billboard is operational or not otherwise being used for emergency situations. Such nonemergency use shall spread out equally across every hour of the day."
