HILLSDALE COUNTY, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - A Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office deputy who was injured in a shooting on Thursday has died. Authorities say the suspect has died after a standoff.
The shooting happened in the area of Beecher Road and Lamb Road in Hillsdale County. Police did not initially provide details on the incident.
Michigan State Police says the suspect, Eric Michael Fiddler, was later found at about 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of Culbert and Osseo streets in Hillsdale County.
"Fiddler was instructed to surrender and produced a weapon and fired on troopers. Troopers returned fire and Fiddler was pronounced deceased on scene," MSP said on X (formerly Twitter) . "We are sad to add that the deputy that was shot on scene has passed away from his injuries. We will not be naming the deputy at this time, pending notification of all family members."
Police say there is no threat to the community.
This is the second fatal shooting in a week involving a sheriff's deputy.
The sheriff's office says Deputy Bradley Reckling and two other detectives were investigating the theft of a 2022 Chevrolet Equinox that was stolen from the Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights.
Authorities said Reckling located the stolen vehicle in Detroit when the driver suddenly stopped and individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire. Oakland County Sheriff Bouchard said the shooting was an "ambush." Recking was driving an unmarked vehicle that did not have a dash cam.
A nine-year veteran of the department, he leaves behind a wife and three kids, ages 5, 4 and 1, with a fourth child on the way.
An 18-year-old man has been charged with three counts of lying to police and one count of resisting arrests. No one has been charged with Reckling's murder.
