Whitmer orders flags to lower in honor of slain Hillsdale County deputy
LANSING, MI -- Flags across the Michigan State Capitol grounds have been lowered in honor of the Hillsdale County deputy killed during a traffic stop last week. The U.S. and Michigan flags at the capitol complex, as well as all public buildings and grounds across Michigan, will be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, July 3, according to an order from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 3, 2024) – For the second time in six days, a sheriff’s deputy in Michigan will be laid to rest. Funeral services for William “Bill” Butler Jr. will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Hillsdale College Christ Chapel. The 51-year-old Hillsdale County deputy died after being shot by a suspect last Thursday. The suspect, 34-year-old Eric Fiddler of Jonesville, who had been wanted on several warrants, died in a shootout with police about four hours later. It’s the first time since 1930 a Hillsdale County police officer has died in the line of duty.
