CAMDEN — Championship season is only just beginning for baseball and softball teams, but one school can already declare themselves a champion and check off one of their goal boxes for this spring.

Camden-Frontier baseball and softball sealed up the SCAA East championships with their most recent league victories.

The baseball team defeated North Adams-Jerome 15-0, Tekonsha 10-2 and Waldron 13-2 to close out their title chase. Coach Michael Conant and the future RedHawks are back-to-back league champions as they close in on their goals for the postseason.

"At the beginning of the year the team came together and set goals," Conant said. "It was great to hit our first goal. As the year has gone on the team has gotten better from top to bottom."

As a mark of that improvement, the team won a doubleheader sweep of in-county rival Reading in 4-1 and 12-2 finals. The Rangers and Camden-Frontier battled in last year's district title game, where Camden-Frontier came out on top.

Dawson Shaw picked up his sixth win of the season in game one, throwing six strikeouts. Jayden Martinez picked up the win in game two, also throwing six strikeouts. Martinez had two doubles, a triple and a total of four RBIs through the two games.

The Camden-Frontier softball team had a similar run against the same teams that resulted in a 16-0 win over North Adams-Jerome, a 12-2 win over Tekonsha and a 14-2 win over Waldron. The team has had luck earning homers in these dominant matchups, including the first career homer for Tydann Cooney.

"The team has shown remarkable improvement in their performance over the past week," coach Malena Lawson said. "Tydann Cooney's first career home run is a testament to the team's hard work and dedication. Ia m confident they will continue to excel and make us proud."

The team is still looking to improve, having fallen recently in two games to their potential district foes in Reading. The Rangers got the best of Camden-Frontier in last year's district championship game.

Part of the success both squads have had this year is due to the standout pitching efforts from their bullpens.

Elexis Landwehr is the top ace for the softball team, having earned six wins and four losses, one of the top winning pitchers in Hillsdale County softball. In support has been Heidi Gawronski who continues to earn wins in limited starts, currently with three on the season.

Dawson Shaw currently leads the county with the only perfect record as a pitcher with more than five starts. He sits at 5-0 overall this season and has also been one of the key batters for Camden-Frontier baseball.

Both teams have impressive hitters. Senior softball player Lexus Sigler currently has 17 multi-base hits, including three homers. Byron Hukill is currently on track to have a shot at breaking the school batting average record for baseball.

Both teams will close out their regular season schedules with a couple tough doubleheaders. They will play at Hillsdale on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader. They will then face Athens on Friday night for a doubleheader.
