    Hassenzahl, Griffiths, Wood and Rorick earn Week 3 Athlete Awards; Vote now for Week 4

    HILLSDALE COUNTY — Congratulations to these four student-athletes for earning Week 3 Athlete of the Week awards. Jonesville athletes Morgan Wood and Brynleigh Griffiths were voted Reader's choice Athlete of the Week honorees. Both athletes received 18,000 votes, and because the final vote was separated by just 22 votes, it was decided to name both athletes as award honorees.

    In addition, Hillsdale Academy junior Grayson Rorick was named the Hillsdale Daily News' boys high school athlete of the week. Hillsdale senior Kassidy Hassenzahl was named the girls high school athlete of the week.

    • Kassidy Hassenzahl - Hillsdale Girls Golf - Hassenzahl finished third overall in individual scoring at the Madison LCAA league jamboree. The senior golfer scored a final total of 53 through nine holes of play. It was the best league finish individually for a Hornet girls golfer so far this season.
    • Grayson Rorick - Hillsdale Academy Boys Cross Country - The junior runner won the Holly Festival of Races Division 5 race, leading his team to back-to-back first place wins at the prestigious invitational. It was his first invitational win, and he finished the event with a time of 16:25.2, 17 seconds ahead of the second place runner.
    • Morgan Wood - Jonesville Volleyball - Morgan Wood helped lead the Comets to a three-set win over Vandercook Lake. Wood had 17 total kills in the tri-match.
    • Brynleigh Griffiths - Jonesville Girls Cross Country - The freshman runner took seventh place overall at the Leslie Blackhawk Invitational. She led her team with a time of 21:56.66, just a second behind her overall PR. It was her best invitational finish so far in her career as a Comet runner. The team overall took third place.

    Congratulations to the four Week 3 honorees. Now, it's time to cast votes for the Week 4 Reader's Choice athlete of the week. Voting stays open until Saturday at midnight. Readers can vote multiple times. Athletes or schools that have won back-to-back reader's choice polls will be eligible after one week off the poll.

    In addition, one boys and girls high school student-athlete will be named an athlete of the week honoree by the Hillsdale Daily News.

    Nominees

    • Abby Affholter – Reading Volleyball:  The senior captain helped Ranger volleyball win their 10th game of the season with five aces, 10 kills, one dig and one bock.
    • Miranda Daniels – North Adams-Jerome Volleyball:  The senior middle hitter helped the Rams earn their first win of 2024 with seven kills and 21 serves from the serve line.
    • Logan Bayer – Hillsdale Soccer:  Against Clinton, the senior first-year goalkeeper faced more than 20 shots on goal, earning a total of 21 saves.
    • Alexis Bryner – Pittsford Volleyball: The freshman starter has led the team in kills this season and earned 23 kills, five blocks, 12 digs and six aces in Week 3.
    • Clara Heath – Hillsdale Academy Volleyball: The senior captain helped her team win two three-set matches against Jackson Christian and Climax Scotts. The senior had a total of 62 assists and had eight aces against Jackson Christian.
    • Nate Portteus/Joel Tucker – Hillsdale Tennis 2 nd Doubles: The Hornet doubles team won a crucial matchup against Columbia Central that allowed the Hornets to split their matchup 4-4 with the Golden Eagles.
    • Nicholas Fowler – Jonesville Boys Cross Country:  Jonesville boys cross country took second in the first Cascades West jamboree of the season. Fowler placed third overall, earning a new personal best time of 16:43.
    • Chloe Stalhood – Hillsdale Girls Cross Country:  The senior runner led all County representation with the best medal finish for a local athlete at the Jackson Invitational. Stalhood had a fourth-place finish with a time of 19:40, a new season best time.
