HILLSDALE — Hillsdale 2024 graduate Annemarie Moore is heading to Trine University to compete as a Thunder athlete during the indoor and outdoor women's track seasons.

The former all-state Hornet follows a similar collegiate path that her older siblings, Maddie and Peter, had also taken. Maddie Moore went to Hope College for track and Peter runs for Olivet College. Moore has an older brother: Anders Moore, who is a graduate of Michigan State and a second lieutenant in the Army. Annemarie Moore chose to follow a study path at Trine University's college of business in addition to her athletic pursuits.

“She just felt like this is the place for her, and they had recruited Maddie when she was in her spot four years ago,” Annemarie's parents, Richard and Micha Moore, said. “We just felt like, wow, because we had never been down there. It was a nice campus, and it’s only gotten better the last four years. She’s going to major in business, and they have a great business school. They’ve just been putting a lot of money into that program, and she’ll have a lot of different opportunities.”

Moore visited several schools during her recruiting journey, but Trine felt like the right college as soon as she stepped onto campus.

“As soon as I (visited) Trine and the campus for the first time, it just felt right," Moore said. “The coaches were amazing. The student athletes I met were all spectacular.”

The former student body president, class president, national honor society member and LCAA Scholar Athlete plans to use her degree to follow the family career path in insurance. Moore participated in the Hillsdale Polar Bear track club, which helped her gain insightful experience in indoor track and field.

“We’re excited for her and where this is going to take her,” the Moore’s said. “We’re just thrilled to be in this position to send another student off to college after a great education here at Hillsdale Community Schools."

Hillsdale track coach Clay Schiman says that finding the right home for academics that matches athletic interest is one of the important things they teach student athletes at Hillsdale High School.

“We are always telling our kids to make sure it’s a place you’re going to fit academically,” Schiman said. “Moore felt Trine was the right place and we’re really, really excited for her and happy about that."

Schiman coached each Moore sibling during their Hornet careers that eventually led to them making the decision to continue that athletic career at the next level.

“They were all-state athletes. They were kids who embraced the hard work that it takes to be good and also shared their passion with others, which is really valuable and important (to our program)."

A 4-year commitment to Hornet athletics

Since her freshman year, Annemarie Moore has played four years for the volleyball team and ran four years for the track and field team at Hillsdale High School. Moore's time on the volleyball team, which saw her earn second team all-area dream team and honorable mention LCAA conference honors her senior year, helped her learn a leadership role that could apply to the team setting for Hillsdale girls track.

I could see my leadership skills growing more in volleyball,” Moore said.

On the track, Moore competed with several athletes that had a great impact on her career, including former Hornet Riley Dietz, whose younger sister Amelia Dietz, graduated with Moore this year. Moore credited Dietz for her leadership that helped influence her own leadership role on the track in her junior and senior year.

That leadership helped the Hillsdale varsity girls track team win a regional championship at their home track during the 2023 spring sports season. The rain-drenched day was one of Annemarie's and her parent's favorite moments during her track career. It was just one of several memorable moments from Moore's junior season.

Moore, a part of a team of runners that included Kia Charboneau, Amelia Dietz and Mia Hinz set new LCAA record times for the 4x100 and 4x200. The teams earned all-state honors in both events at the MHSAA finals, with a 4x100 time of 50.44 that took second overall in that event. They took second again in the 4x200, with a final time of 1:47.58. In both events, they battled right to the finish with the eventual winners.

    Senior Season

Moore started running the 400 as a freshman, but she quickly became a fan of short distance running, the events she will pursue for the Trine Thunder track team.

“Personally, my favorite is the 100,” Moore said. “I think its short and sweet.”

Moore ran the 200, 100 and 400-meter dashes her senior season. Moore won two 100-meter dash events. She took home four gold medals in the 200. She also had a top four finish, with a PR of 27.37, at the regional finals and took fourth at the MITCA team state meet. The senior had finished in the top five of all her senior 200-meter dash events.

In the 400-meter dash, Moore ran just one event before the regional finals. At the regional finals, she set a personal best time of 1:01.90 to take third overall and qualify individually for the state finals. She took 21st in the finals, with a final time of 1:02.51.

It wasn't the only event Moore qualified for the finals in. Along with senior Amelia Dietz, Moore led the 4x100 team including Jayce Graham and Megan Kast to a conference title, regional title, an Area Best title and a 10th place finish at this year's state finals. The team also took third at the MITCA team state meet.

Moore has been on seven state-qualifying relay teams for the Hornets during her career and went to the finals each year of her career. This included the 11th place 4x100 team from 2022, the 11th place 4x200 team from 2022, the ninth place 4x200 team from 2021 and the 16th place 4x400 team from 2021.

She helped lead the Hornet varsity girls track team to a third-place finish at regionals this year.

Moore credited her siblings for helping guide and push her throughout her journey as a Hornet athlete and student.

“Thank you for being guides in life,” Moore said. “They’ve always helped me. They taught me what type of leader I should be and the person I want to be in my life. I owe a lot to them.”

Moore says her parents continue to support her as she now takes a journey to the next level of competition.

“They’re always so supportive,” Moore said. “They’re always there for me, even the little things. I don’t think they truly know how much I appreciate them and their guidance. They have taught and raised me in a loving home.”

Moore thanked coach Schiman, her teammates and fellow seniors for their support during her track career with Hillsdale College. Moore is not the only Hornet heading to Trine this season, as fellow graduate Nolan Grant will join the Thunder men's track team.
