Three properties owned by the Carroll County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will be auctioned Sat., July 20 in the Carroll County Industrial Park.
The sale for the Carroll County IDA will begin at 10 a.m. for three properties listed as commercial and/or farm land at Property #2, located at 497 Industrial Drive in Hillsville (closest GPA address is Appalachian Natural Gas Company). Two of the properties are located inside the Carroll County Industrial Park, while the other is on Route 221 and adjoins Magnolia property between Magnolia and Russell’s Garage. The sale will be conducted by Dawn Auction of Hillsville and Alderman Auction of Galax. The auction will be an absolute auction.
According to Joey Dickson, Chairman of the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, Carroll supervisors suggested the Carroll County IDA get rid of some of the property the county doesn’t use or need.
“They’re not doing any good sitting there. We can sell it to be used in the county, then get it on the tax base,” Dickson said. “The land left does not really fit for an industry that has been there for years and nobody really wanted it for an industry. We asked them to sell some of the land so we agreed to do an absolute auction on it on the 20th. And then we can use the proceeds to do some projects in the county and put it toward some projects. We’re not sure what yet, but we have plenty of projects we are doing. And the plus is you get it on the tax roll. Land sitting there for years does you no good. At least we will be bringing in taxes and tax revenue on it every year.”
Dickson said the county picked Dawn Auction and Alderman Auction because it wanted to go with local auctioneers, noting Dawn Auction bid on doing some auctions for the county a few years back. He described the two properties inside the Industrial Park as one being beside Virginia Produce and the other close to the natural gas office.
“Every little bit helps. We want to get it on the books and we think there will be some interested parties for the auction,” Dickson said. “As far as I know, it was land that was never really used.”
