Homer K. Ball Golf Tournament raises money for Concord University’s scholarships
ATHENS, W.Va. (Hinton News) – The 35th Annual Homer K. Ball Memorial Golf Tournament took place on Friday, June 14 at Pipestem State Park—the proceeds from this tournament fund scholarships for Concord University students. This year the winning men’s team was representing Summit Community Bank with players Randy Price, Dexter Moore, Garry Moore and Bob Ramsey (not pictured). The winning women’s team was from the Elks Club, with players Carolyn Truman, Donna Kowaleski, Sandra Gay and Linda Zirkle. Homer K. Ball, a Lerona native, graduated from Concord in 1948. Throughout his career, he served as Sheriff of Mercer County, West Virginia State Senator, and Director of the Physical Plant at Concord University. Ball was also an avid golfer. In 1991, the annual golf tournament benefiting Concord was named in his honor. After Ball’s passing in 2008, the tournament was renamed the Homer K. Ball Memorial Golf Tournament. The post Homer K. Registration is open for The 2024 West Virginia Potters’ gathering at Concord University
ATHENS, W.Va. (Hinton News) – Potters and pottery enthusiasts will gather at Concord University on November 1-3, 2024 to attend the West Virginia Potters’ Gathering. The event includes lectures by veteran potters, demonstrations, vendor sales, and a student art show. This year’s guest artist is Linda Christianson, an independent studio potter from rural Minnesota. She studied at Hamline University (St Paul, Minnesota), and the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts (Banff, Alberta, Canada). Senior Status Judge Herman Canady Has Passed Away
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) – Senior Status Judge Herman G. Canady, Jr., passed away on Tuesday, June 11. Judge Canady was born and raised in Kanawha County. He attended State High School in Institute but became the first African American student at Charleston High School when he attended a summer session there during eleventh grade. He later received a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a law degree from West Virginia University College of Law. WVDNR accepting applications for waterfowl hunt at McClintic WMA
ALUM CREEK, W.VA. (Hinton News) — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is now accepting applications for a controlled waterfowl hunt at the McClintic Wildlife Management Area, located near Point Pleasant. Waterfowl hunters who wish to participate in the permit-only hunt must submit an application by midnight on Aug. 16. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) — The West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council announced $40 million in funding for sewer and water projects around the state at its meeting on June 5. Details for the projects are listed below. Hancock County Public Service District (PSD) The council approved a $6.5 million grant to the Hancock County PSD for improvements to its sewer system and improvements to the Newell system. These funds, along with funds from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Hancock County Commission and other funding programs, provide $25.6 million for these projects. Gov. Justice declares Juneteenth 2024 as State holiday in West Virginia, reminds public about annual Juneteenth Celebration
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) —Gov. Jim Justice issued a proclamation, officially declaring Juneteenth 2024 as a State holiday in West Virginia. Juneteenth, which is recognized on June 19 each year, celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States. The Juneteenth State holiday this year will be observed on Wednesday, June 19, 2023, as a full-day holiday for all public employees of the State. Gov. Justice also reminds West Virginians that the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration on the Kanawha Boulevard lawns of the West Virginia Capitol Complex on Saturday, June 15, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
