A Peek into Summers County’s Past: Talcott Cash Store and Miller Mercantile Company
SUMMERS COUNTY W.Va. (Hinton News) - One of my favorite items in my vast collection is little antique local advertising pieces like you see here. They are usually something that was commonly used, so when you used them, you would think of the business it was advertising. The first item in this week's piece is a little flour sifter from the early 1930s from the Miller Mercantile Company. It was operated in a partnership by Hugh C. Miller, E. C. Miller and Mrs. Melvina Miller in Talcott, West Virginia. I have been unable to find out much about it other than it was a business that was in operation...

Musings from Memory Lane: Echoes
As I walk the boundaries of my property, echoes from the past are all around me. This place I call home has been seeing my family's footsteps since 1927. If I listen closely enough, I can almost hear the echoes of voices long gone. I hear my great-grandparents planting a garden and my Dad running over his cousin with a pedal car. Another cousin hiding in the briar patch to escape being found after doing something he wasn't supposed to. All the apple butter making and hog killing, in my mind's eye, still exists. Not to mention my Grandpa Dee courting my grandma. Fast forward, and there's my Dad as a little...

OP-ED: Palliative Care Nurses continue to make a difference in our lives
Among the required classes in nursing programs are those that include instruction about the history of nursing. Florence Nightingale in the mid-1850s is a reference point for many in association with nursing as a profession. Yet a rich, and largely unknown, history exists in family, neighbors and friends caring for loved ones in their residences, people who tended to the ill and injured on battlefields, those who provided attentively for individuals sickened by plagues and epidemics, etc. (https://www.nursing.upenn.edu/nhhc/american-nursing-an-introduction-to-the-past/). Today, palliative care nurses are highly trained and are making significant contributions to the healthcare chronically ill people receive along with serving...
